Veteran of War Gives Poison To Son; Kills Self - Andrew HOUSEMAN, Jobless, Dies After Drinking Strychnine: Despondent, apparently because he had been unable to find employment, Andrew HOUSEMAN, 36, of 541 Fenimore avenue, committed suicide late Thurs
day afternoon by taking strychnine, and in the opinion of Dr. R. G. Cook, county coroner, had previously attempted to administer some of the poison to Andrew Justice HOUSEMAN, his four year old son. The father's body was found on a bed by Mrs. Birdie HOUSEMAN, widow, when the latter returned from work at the Henderson-Ames Company. Lying beside the father's body was the four year old son, who showed signs of illness and who was suffering from convulsions. Mrs. HOUSEMAN called neighbors and Dr.Cook was notified. The son was placed under medical care and it was announced Friday that his condition was favorable. Sheriff's officers joined with the coroner in investigating the suicide. The coroner stated that HOUSEMAN had purchased a 30 grainbottle of strychnine from a drug store earlier in the day. The officers did not succeed in finding the bottle. It is believe the son may have been given the poison in milk. Mrs. HOUSEMAN said Friday that her husband and had been out of employment since early in January, and that he had been broken-hearted over his failure to get work. She said they were purchasing their home and that her husband had gotten the impression that employers favored applicants from other cities and states in preference to Kalamazoo labor. Mrs. HOUSEMAN had been working but one week. HOUSEMAN was a veteran of the World war. He is survived by the widow, Birdie, and one son; the mother, Mrs. Mary HOUSEMAN, Morley, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Rufus STILSON, Morley, Mich; and two brothers, Nicholas of Arkansas and Albert of Morley, Mich. Two sons died previously. The husband's occupation was that of a millwright or inspector. He was born in Morley, Mich. source: Kalamazoo Gazette Friday, March 21, 1930 (submitted by avolunteer, no family connection)
